Tours and Visits
Nestled in the mountains of Gilpin County, Colorado, Lincoln Hills was founded in 1922 as the only African American resort community west of the Mississippi during the Jim Crow era. It offered Black families a rare and treasured refuge—an opportunity to gather, rest, and reconnect with nature at a time when access to recreational spaces was denied elsewhere.
At the heart of this historic community stands Winks Lodge, a rustic guesthouse built by visionary entrepreneur Obrey “Winks” Hamlet. More than a place to stay, the Lodge became a vibrant cultural hub—welcoming jazz greats, writers, civil rights leaders, and families who came seeking joy, healing, and community. Today, Lincoln Hills and Winks Lodge remain powerful symbols of Black resilience, heritage, and the ongoing pursuit of equity in the outdoors.
Visiting Lincoln Hills
Please note that Winks Lodge is not open for general public access at this time. We are currently engaged in a formal process to determine whether the site qualifies as a Traditional Cultural Property (TCP)—a designation for places deeply rooted in the cultural traditions, history, and identity of a living community.
In addition, Winks Lodge is undergoing restoration and preservation efforts to ensure its historical integrity and continued legacy for future generations.
